The Disney Store, the retail arm of media conglomerate The Walt Disney Company, has awarded TNT Logistics its UK distribution contract – and TNT is utilizing vehicles assigned to another customer to benefit both of its clients.

The TNT liveried vehicles which are used to deliver Nissan Renault spare parts to 450 dealerships throughout the UK at night will also be utilized to deliver merchandise to the 59 Disney stores in the UK during the day.

“Both clients are based at Magna Park in the Midlands and by maximizing the use of the vehicles, we are reducing costs for everyone,” said Rob McWhirter, managing director of business development for TNT Logistics UK. “We have worked with Nissan for more than 14 years and, as with all our clients, we continuously seek ways to improve both efficiency and service levels for them.”

For the Disney Store, TNT Logistics will make about 120 deliveries a week from January to October and then double that number in the run-up to Christmas. There are more than 4,500 product lines, delivered in roll cages, including soft toys, stationery, dress-up clothing and DVDs.

The operation, previously in-house, is run out of The Disney Store's European distribution center at Magna Park, where stock is also held for the company's other retail outlets throughout the rest of Europe.

“The operation provides significant service and cost benefits to The Disney Store,” said Nick Snelson, director of distribution operations for the retailer.

Benefiting from strong overseas sales, Japanese auto firm Nissan Motor Company has reported consolidated net income of JPY518 billion ($4.6 billion) for fiscal 2006, up 1.1% on the previous year and a record for the sixth consecutive year.

“Nissan delivered a solid performance in fiscal 2005 despite the many challenges facing the global auto industry including higher raw material prices, higher energy costs, higher interest rates and higher incentives,” said Nissan president and CEO Carlos Ghosn. “Although we had few product introductions, we continued to grow our global sales driven by the attractiveness of our existing products and sound business fundamentals.”

Net revenues in for the year totaled JPY9.4 trillion ($83.2 billion), up 9.9% on 2005. Nissan sold a record 3,569,295 vehicles during the year. In the US, sales advanced 6.1% despite no new models to 1,075,097 units. In Japan, sales fell 0.7% to 842,062 units. In Europe, where sales are reported on a calendar-year basis, sales were down 0.6% to 540,945 units. Sales in general overseas markets, however, increased by 13%.

Commenting on the outlook for the current fiscal year, Mr Ghosn said 2006 would be a year of two distinct halves for Nissan, “In the first half, growth will be hard to achieve, but in the second half we have an intensive product launch offensive that will last through the remainder of Nissan Value-Up and beyond… Our second-generation products are especially attractive and competitive and I expect them to make significant contributions to our business development.”

Nissan will release a total of nine all-new models during fiscal 2006. Three will be launched in the US, including the all-new Altima, Sentra and Infiniti G35 sedans.

Japanese carmaker Nissan has revealed plans to invest $200 million in a new assembly plant in St Petersburg, Russia.

Should the plan receive approval from Russia’s Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, production will begin in 2009.

When fully operational, the plant will employ around 750 people and produce around 50,000 units per year. Nissan says the new facility will produce a variety of vehicles specifically adapted for the Russian market.

“The continued growth of the Russian market, and Nissan’s presence in that market, was a key factor in deciding to start local production,” said Colin Dodge, senior vice president for Nissan Europe.

“We are confident this plant will build upon Nissan’s reputation as an efficient and flexible manufacturer of high quality, attractive vehicles aimed at satisfying the needs of our Russian customers.”
